ARTISTdirect presents (hed) p.e. November 01, 2000 (hed) p.e. have come a long way from the Orange County club scene after releasing their debut album and touring the states with Ozzfest. While sharing the stage with bands like Korn, Slipknot, and Static-X, they soon realized they had won over a legion of their own fans. Currently (hed) p.e. is back on the road with P.O.D. in support of their new release, "Broke." Read what the band had to say about their music and life on a tour bus! ARTISTdirect: Hey everyone, welcome to the ARTISTdirect chat with (hed) p.e. We're here with the band, ready for your questions so let's go now! Chad: Hello! Linda: "Broke" reveals what the p.e. in your name means, what does the (hed) stand for? Why/how did you choose that name? Chad: Well, the {hed} doesn't stand for anything. We were just called "hed" when we started out, but for legal reasons we had to add something to it if we wanted to keep the name "hed" so we added the p.e. Originally on our first album, our first major album, it stood for "Planetary Evolution" but since then we changed it to "Planet Earth". Suzy: Who was your favorite band at Ozzfest? Chad: I didn't see the Ozzfest this year, unfortunately. But when we played it, I think it was fun, it seemed like it would be the most fun, because it was the last time when the original Black Sabbath members were there touring, so it was kind of special. Jojo: What song do you most enjoy playing live and why? Chad: Oh wow. Well, I like different ones for different reasons. I like playing "Killing Time" a lot because it's what we are opening up the show with right now. So we are really getting down. But, recently, on this tour there's been a lot of Christians that come to the shows, because of P.O.D., and they are a Christian band, so I enjoy playing "Jesus of Nazareth" a lot for those fans, and seeing what their reaction is. Asda: Who is on the album cover? Chad: That's a funny question. That's actually this real life homeless person who lives in New York. And when we were trying to figure out what we would make the album cover for "Broke", someone just happened to find this guy sitting outside our record label, Jive, in New York, and he was in a cap and gown, and we thought it was hilarious, hilarious enough to at least get a few pictures, and once we saw it we knew, we had to use this, it was perfect. Staind: "Bartender" was a good pick as the 1st single from "Broke", what will be the next single? Any songs been talked about for being single #2? Chad: Yeah, right now, we want to put out "Killing Time". I think collectively we all think that song kicks ass, so we want to see what people think of it. Jojo: Is there somewhere you would like to tour but haven't as yet? Chad: Oh man, YEAH! We haven't even really been anywhere. We have only been to Europe one time, and we mostly stayed towards the north, so the whole band is excited about going to Japan, and going to places they haven't been like Australia. Personally, I don't think it would happen, but it would be cool if we could go and visit India. Broken Soul: Just wanted to know what what went down with the "mystery" package and M.C.U.D. Chad: That is just a big misunderstanding between us and the FBI. But you know what's funny, we just recently made friends with the Secret Service. You won't believe this, but in Washington, DC, where we just played, our tour manager came to the dressing room and said there is a guy from the CIA and the Secret Service and they are fans, and we didn't believe them, but they checked out, and they wanted to meet us! We might even get to go to the White House! Bobie: When you tour, do you get lonely? Is there special people you leave behind when you are on tour? Chad: Yes! I have some really tight friends back home in Huntington Beach, where I live, and if we're gone for more than a month or so at any time, I will want to kick it at home for at least a week, so I can do my normal things. Jared Fan: What do you guys do when you don't agree on something musically? How do you resolve those conflicts? Chad: Wow! It's a big democracy, our band. It takes a lot of compromise, but I think collectively, I know personally, everyone has got a lot of talent, and I'm flattered to play with everybody, and I think everybody feels that mutual respect for each other, so we want to help each other out as much as we can. We don't care who has which part, we want to do what is best for the band, and it works out pretty good, and makes everybody happy. Ben Jay: What do you think of Napster and it now agreeing to charge a fee to go to artists? Chad: Well unfortunately, I haven't paid that much attention to it. So I probably don't have that much of a knowledgeable opinion. I think that anybody who wants to watch a movie or buy a movie or music or anything that an artist puts out, the artist should be paid for it, it only seems fair to me, I would want to pay for something like that out of my love for the artist.
