BodyforLIFE: Welcome to Body-for-LIFE.com's Chats with Champions. Tonight's guest is 1998 Body-for-LIFE Champion Dr. Jeffry Life from Meshoppen, PA. This Body-for-LIFE Champion improved his health, gained energy and lost 35 lbs. of unwanted body fat. Dr. Life, thank you for joining and spending time with us tonight. Jeffry: Hello everybody…and it's a pleasure to be a part of this new technology. Uptowngirl: What inspired you to take the Challenge? Jeffry: Uptowngirl, during late 1997, I was going through a bitter, bitter divorce, and I had gained more weight than I ever gained before. I was up over 200 lbs. I was depressed. My cholesterol was off the wall, and my joints hurt. I was short of breath climbing just a small flight of steps. One of my patients left a copy of "Muscle Media" magazine in one of my examining rooms. To this day, I don't know who that was, but I owe him or her a lot. I took it home and ready through it front to back. I was impressed with the quality and the level of science. So that night, I called and subscribed to it. It wasn't long before I got my first copy, and that was about the time that the first challenge was ending, and I began to see the winners and learned more and more about this contest. I could not believe the changes the people had made in just 12 weeks. I thought it was a hoax. I studied it more and more and decided to order the packet of material, and I think the one person who stuck out in my mind was Porter Freeman. If Porter could do this, maybe I could do this. So in February of 1990, I took my before pictures and actually by that time I'd lost a little weight, down to just under 200 lbs. I started the challenge and did it just like I was supposed to. Only at that time, we didn't have Bill's book, "Body for LIFE," so I had to get my diet info from other sources, and I hired a trainer and started training. I took the supplements, creatine, betagen, and Myoplex and it wasn't long, I would say 2-3 weeks, when I started noticing significant changes. I stuck with the program, and I really could not believe the results I got. I still can't. People at work thought I was nuts bringing in a cooler every day with my food. I would go to people's homes for cookouts and bring my own food. They thought I was a bit strange. I hoped one day they would realize what it was all about, and sure enough…by the end of 12-13 weeks, they couldn't believe the change. My patients kept asking what I was doing. I had several patients start the program after they saw me. Since then many patients have started and completed the program. It has dramatically changed my life. I continue and will continue to do this until I can't. Buff Now: Dr. Life, I really like your Oatmeal Pancake recipe! It's become a standard at our breakfast table on Sunday mornings. I was wondering how closely you've followed the Eating-for-Life program since your initial 12-week transformation. Jeffry: Thank you. That pancake recipe just sort of developed spontaneously one day when I didn't know quite what to fix. Actually, my wife likes that pancake recipe a lot, too. Yes, I do follow the nutrition for life program. There have been times since I won when I've fallen back to old habits, and it doesn't take long before I start feeling bad; my joints still ache. Once I get back on track eating 5-6 meals per day -- high in protein, low in fat, moderate amount of low glycemic index carbs, I start feeling great again. And the nice thing is that now Bill's book really gave me a lot more choices. Prior to the book coming out, my choices were limited to chicken and fish, but now he's given me a lot more choices, and they all work. I try to get my patients to follow this nutrition plan. I'm human and every now and then I fall back to old habits, but every time I do I start feeling bad again. I even start to feel depressed when I fall back. My plan is to stay on this nutrition program for the rest of my life. And it was exactly through this nutrition program that I was able to lower my cholesterol and blood sugar and prevent degenerative diseases I know I would have gotten.
