Boxtop presents Actor Danny Masterson August 21, 1998 Kibble: What's your favorite type of music? Which artists' work do you enjoy? Danny Masterson: My favorite band in Pearl Jam, then the Rolling Stones. I love the Black Crows. I like a lot of hip-hop, and old jazz. Love 60s and 70s rock and roll. The Blues. But definitely my heart belongs to Pearl Jam. I've seen them about 6 times in concert now and each time was amazing. I love Nirvana, and that Seattle sound. One of my best days in life so far was driving up to San Francisco to see Pearl Jam open for the Rolling Stones. Talking amazing! Oh, and we can't leave out Beck. Love that guy. There's original 70s music in our show - they're spending a lot of money getting the original bands for the show. When the audience is coming in about 30 minutes before the show, they're blasting the music. It really psyches you up and gets you into character. Jezebel: If you could play any role on stage, film or TV, what would it be? Danny Masterson: Let's see. I'd say Sean Penn's role in "State of Grace." Warren Beatty's role in "Shampoo." Probably the kid in the movie "The Butcher Boy." He played the role of Francie Brady. I don't know his name, but he was brilliant. A 10-year-old Irish kid. As for the future, I don't have any specifics. I'd like to do a few leading man roles, but not too many. Anything that's not easy to play is most interesting and the most challenging. You feel the best after you've done - like you've really accomplished something. For me so far that has been my role in "Too Pure" coming out in the next year or so, playing an addict and squatter. And another independent film coming out where I play an innocent character - a real contrast to growing up in New York with a filthy mouth and a dirty mind. When they said "action" I really had to be on top of it! Mortimer: What is the most exciting aspect of acting? Danny Masterson: The cash! That's pretty exciting. It's just fun having it! Norton: Is there someone you are really hoping to work with? Danny Masterson: Lots of people! Sean Penn, Gary Oldman, Daniel Day Lewis, Jean Renault, Helena Bonham Carter (I think she's amazing), and Bonnie Hunt again - I think she's the most brilliant woman alive. I worked with her on Beethoven's 2nd - the first movie I ever did. Hortense: Do you work with any charities or other causes? Do you feel that people in the public eye can bring something extra to such work? Danny Masterson: Yes, I think that celebrities endorsing different causes gets people interested, and the one I'm attached to is CCHR - The Citizens' Commission of Human Rights, which is trying to get psych drugs out of kids, and outlawing electro-shock therapy. It's a big-money industry, so it's a hard battle. But it's pretty sick what they do. What CCHR does is to battle with lawsuits anybody who's been wronged by the mental health institutions, shutting down hospitals that do illegal things. And publicizing what happens to kids who are put on Prozac or Ritalin when they are just being creative - running around drawing and expressing themselves. Artistic expression is so important, and comes in a whole range of forms.
