Checkout.com presents Mike Schmitt, Producer November 30, 1999 Tombraiderrules: Some of the camera angles in the other Tomb Raider games were troublesome; sometimes I couldn't even see Lara if she was in a corner or something. Why is this and has the problem been fixed? Mike Schmitt: We worked on the camera for this latest installment, and the user is always able to take control of the camera by hitting the Look button. You can always line up for jumps, or get a grasp on where you are. Curiousone: With a game like this that's released on two platforms, it seems like one always gets more attention; do you have two different teams working on each platform, or do you have to divide your time between them, which usually results in one getting less attention? Mike Schmitt: We have one team working on both versions, although we have a couple of programmers who may be focused more on one than the other. But the game itself is the same! Bright Angel: Can you share with us any "Easter Eggs" that we can find in the game? Mike Schmitt: If you find all 8 gold skulls in the first training level, you get a different level of the second level - a much harder version! Tuatha: Was Lara modeled after any real person, and if so who? Mike Schmitt: Just a figment of someone's imagination! Diehardrpgfan: When will game makers start moving out of this trend or massive animated movie footage in games? Sorry but it is boring sitting through all of it. Mike Schmitt: Tomb Raider does use some animated footage to set up and tell the story, and that's a favorite part of the game for a lot of people. Co-owenmcdunknutt: I've seen the new Tomb Raider for on the PlayStation, and while the graphics are great for the PS, when can I see it on a higher system like the Dreamcast or PS2? Mike Schmitt: I really can't talk about future systems right now. (Smile) Co-leezard: I have never played any of the Tomb Raider games before. Is this the wrong game to start with? Mike Schmitt: Not at all! It's actually a good starting point, because it does recapture the spirit of the first game. It plays as kind of like a continuous adventure from start to finish - almost like a Hollywood movie. That's just how it feels, like you're playing one adventure. Co-atreus: Lara is frequently touted as a strong female role model, but have you been tempted to alter the appearance of Lara in response to the many accusations of sexism leveled at the franchise? Mike Schmitt: I think if we changed the look of the character at this point, there would probably be more complaints than if we just left her alone! Other looks were considered, but only in the beginning.
