Tal Bachman
Chat about his self-titled album

March 02, 2000

How can anyone admire ABBA? Tal Bachman can, and he tells you why. Tal also chats about his self-titled album, the influence his father (Randy Bachman of The Guess Who and Bachman-Turner Overdrive) had on his music, and his new obsession with the internet.

SonyMusic: Welcome to Tal Bachman's first official online chat! Tal has grown up in a house thoroughly permeated with music, thanks to his father's voluminous record collection. His father is Randy Bachman, member of The Guess Who and Bachman-Turner Overdrive. Welcome, Tal!

Tal Bachman: Hello, everyone! Thanks for participating, I look forward to hearing your questions this evening, and let's get started.

Bulldog-fan: What exactly does "She's So High" mean?

Tal Bachman: Gee, I'm speechless. I mean, the words are "She's so high, high above me." She's an exalted woman. That's all it means.

Shade24: Is the woman that the song "She's So High" is about someone you actually met?

Tal Bachman: Well, yeah, it was partially inspired by the hottest girl in my high school, who I tried to bribe to go out with my stepbrother. But really, whenever I write a song -- and "She's So High" is included here -- a million things pass through my mind. Everything from that particular incident to the awe that anyone feels when they meet anyone who is more attractive than they are or better than they are or being in love with PW.

Little Atom Bomb: Hi, Tal! Your post you did for the BBS about Britney Spears was hilarious! Can we look forward to more of your witty posts?

Tal Bachman: Hello, Little Atom Bomb! I don't know how witty they'll be, but you can look forward to dozens of rambling, semi-coherent stories, anecdotes, fictionalized accounts, etc. I can already feel myself becoming obsessed with the website and all its possibilities. For the last four days all I can think about is all of the messages people have sent into the website and how I've got to respond to them. If you have any cool ideas for the webpage, let me know. (www.talbachman.com) I'm thinking of expanding the Action Man series to a regular feature, with daily or weekly episodes.

Savage Violet: How often do you visit your web site?

Tal Bachman: Well, I only got hooked up to the Internet about a week ago, and only started going on like four days ago. But I've been on every day since then. This is really the first time that I've been able to communicate with any fans, because at shows I only ever have time to say, "Hello," or, "Thank you," or, "How are you doing?" -- there's really no in- depth discussion.

The Rain Woman: How does it feel to accomplish success?

Tal Bachman: Well, what I've accomplished professionally so far has been a source of a lot of excitement for me and I'm really happy about everything, but every time I climb to the top of a little mountain I can see another one ahead of me that I want to climb as well, and so I think of success as something that is almost more of a process for me. In other words, it certainly has never occurred to me that 'now I'm successful'. There's so much more I want to accomplish via music or other avenues.
