HBO presents Tammy Faye Bakker Messner November 28, 2000 Mascara: You seem sincere about your message, but do you think your image gets in the way of the message sometimes? Tammy Faye: That all depends on how you look at it. If you look on the outside, then maybe it does. But if you're the kind of person who looks past the outside, and wants to get to really know a person, I don't think it gets in the way. Noah: Who do you view as the most influential person in your life? In your career? Tammy Faye: The most influential in my life was probably my grandmother. She taught me to be very strong, yet she taught me good manners. She'd say, "Pull yourself up by your bootstraps, and keep going!" She never would let me have pity parties. She taught me more than anyone else did, she was my best friend, and I miss her a lot. Mascara: I haven't been able to see the whole movie, but I saw that part of the trailer where you were walking through the ruins of Heritage USA. What was going through your mind as you saw it again? Tammy Faye: I was extremely sad. I was so sad. People couldn't see, but the tears were dripping down under my sunglasses. I so wish I could do something to make it live again. It was such a happy place, a place that was so alive. I'd do anything to make it live again. Bucky500: Tammy, I have dozens of videotapes of you beginning with your half-hour cooking and crafts show. Any chance you might do a cooking/crafts video? How about a new CD? Tammy Faye: Please get hold of me. We're looking for them right now! Please email me at tammy@tammyfaye.com I need some of those tapes, they'd really help me; and that is the kind of show that I'll be discussing in New York. I need to take some of those tapes with me, so please, please, please get in touch with me and I'll send them right back to you as soon as I get back from New York. Linda Lured: Just a comment. I have loved and admired Tammy Faye for years. Her strength has helped to bond women together hopefully in her image. One of my greatest strengths has been my "You Can Make It" magnet on the refrigerator. Tammy Faye: That's really precious. That means a lot to me that you would still have that. Lollolla: What plans do you see for yourself in the immediate future? How bout in the long term? Tammy Faye: For one thing, the CD I'm going to make. Hopefully I'll do television as well. I've been in television for 35 years, and I feel that I was born to do television. I'm very at home on television, and would like to do another variety TV show. But you know, God is inside me, so wherever I go, God goes with me. Mission Man: What soap opera are you appearing on, and are there any plans for movies in the future? Tammy Faye: I'm not in any soap opera. I've done Drew Carey a few times as Mimi's mom. But otherwise, no, I'm not on TV. And no movie plans, because I don't memorize well. I adlib, and get nervous about memorizing so I probably wouldn't do movies. Curious: What do you think is the greatest thing about the movie? What do you think could have been better? Tammy Faye: I think the movie told the truth. There's one scene that could have been a lot better, the scene with the guy from USA Network. That was the most uncomfortable place I've ever been in my life, with him! I've done TV for so many years, and he told me that probably wasn't where I belonged! I wish I could have prepared more for that, but I walked in on it cold. The rest of the movie is probably as it should be, because it is the truth. Jillian: Has it been by the grace of God that you have been able to deal with the hardships in your life? And do you look at yourself as a strong woman with great convictions? Tammy Faye: Yes, it has been by the grace of God. I could never have survived without the Lord Jesus Christ as my Savior. The Scriptures promise He will give us joy and peace. In Romans 8:28, it says, "For we know that all things work together for good, to those that love God and to those that are the called according to His purpose." That verse literally kept me alive. So it was my faith in God that kept me alive.
