Olean: Welcome! Tonight's chat with Dr. Kris Clark is the first in a series sponsored by Olean's Empowerment Plus Program. We'll be talking about how to hone your personal goals and create an achievable success program. We'll give you the motivation to get there! It always helps to talk and to hear others' stories, so let's get started. Welcome Dr. Clark

Dr. Clark: Hello. Thank you very much for having me tonight. I am very excited to be here and to answer any questions that any of you might have regarding how to have a better diet, perhaps how to lose weight the right way, and perhaps incorporate some physical activity in your daily life. I'm ready for your questions!

Mimi: Hi doctor! What is this empowerment program about?

Dr. Clark: The empowerment program is designed to help women gain more control over how they live a healthy lifestyle, including how they choose foods, how they spend their time exercising, and how they make choices about their lifestyles.

Shannon: Hi Kris, can you explain what you mean by goals?

Dr. Clark: The concept of goals is really designed to help people focus on a strategy for achieving something they desire, such as making a lifestyle change. They might select what it is they want to change, and describe what it is they want to change. Maybe they want to add a type of exercise or physical activity into their life - that would be a start to creating a goal. But typically, a goal is an end result. A strategy that puts them in place helps a person achieve.

Wanda87: Can you give us some examples of achievable, small goals? Do they all revolve around eating?

Dr. Clark: Achievable small goals can include trying to incorporate a certain type of food into your diet that you know you are not eating enough of, for example, adding more fruit. You might want to identify how you could add fruit into your diet, such as buying it twice a week and putting it in a basket on your counter top so that you see it every day. Another example would be buying dried fruit and taking it to work so that you have a snack of dried fruit. So those are strategies that you would use to meet your small goal of bringing more fruit into your diet. Another small goal might be to incorporate more walking into your daily life, and to achieve that small goal, you might keep records. You might record how many minutes you walk each day - that will be very motivating to help you reach that small goal.
