Showtime presents Jay Bright October 22, 1999 Jay Bright, co-trainer for Mike Tyson, chats about Tyson's career and training regimen. Showtime: Welcome! Unfortunately, Tommy Brooks, Mike Tyson's trainer, can not be here, so Showtime is bringing you Jay Bright, Mike Tyson's co-trainer to speak for Mr. Brooks. Iron Mike takes on Orlin Norris this Saturday to reclaim the WBC International Heavyweight Championship, live from Las Vegas, this Saturday night, Only on SHOWTIME. And now, here's Jay Bright! Jay Bright: It's a pleasure to be here on Showtime. Miniver: How have you been mentally and physically preparing Tyson for this fight? Jay Bright: Mentally and physically, what we have been doing is trying to get him back to the fundamentals that he was taught by Cus D'Amato. That is the foundation of his boxing style and ideology. Harvey: Do you still find the influence of Cus D'Amato in Mike? Jay Bright: That's funny that should be brought up because many times in the course of a conversation, I will just touch very briefly on things that Cus discussed with us and taught us. Mike, without any hesitation, will elaborate on it, so it's my belief that he has retained a lot more of Cus' wisdom than he is even consciously aware of. Marc: You must be preparing him hard for the fight. What does Tyson's training consist of? What is his daily schedule? Jay Bright: He gets up approximately 4:30 am, does his road work, goes home, rests, and has a light breakfast Then from about Noon Until 1: 00 pm, he goes to the boxing gym. When he arrives at the gym, he changes, gets his hands wrapped, jumps rope for several rounds, then spars for several rounds. Then he hits the heavy bag, the speed bag, and finally he does calisthenics and body exercises, and works on a device that Cus initiated, which is a slip bag. Then he goes home and goes to his strength and conditioning coach, whose name is Keith Klavan, and does various muscular as well as aerobic exercises and drills. He does this for an hour or two. Then he goes home, has his dinner, and then watches TV or a video and then goes to bed. Jingo: Have you guys done anything to build Mike's stamina? He usually looks tired in the later rounds. Jay Bright: What he has been doing is boxing more rounds, as well as practicing certain specific maneuvers and drills so that he is prepared to go the entire distance during the fight.
