Talk City presents Martin Yate, Author of the Knock 'Em Dead Books January 17, 2001 Rhiannon: A friend of mine took this course before and she said you answered her questions personally. Is this true? Martin Yate: Rhiannon, when you join the course, there is a message board. And I encourage you to take advantage of it. This is about the one place in the world where you can get my advice for FREE. Usually working as a career's consultant to executives, you would pay 250 bucks an hour for this, but for the next two and a half or three weeks, if you have a question, I will do my very best to answer it. In fact, in the history of this online course, I have answered in detail every single question except the improper ones, which are referred to my 1-900 number. Yeah, if you have a question, we will do our best for me to answer it, and I will also ask for input from career experts who are my friends and colleagues. Dawna: I've taken some of the other online courses and they have assignments and homework. Does your course? Martin Yate: Hey Dawna, yes, there are assignments. These are NOT hypothetical assignments, and neither are they going to be graded. As Terra is saying in the background here, and she is so right, "as she who must be obeyed" always is, that these are tasks, that move you towards the final goal, in order to manage your career, to get it underway, and get it moving in a positive direction. This is a chance to engage in important creative tasks for your career, and have the opportunity to talk to an expert about questions you might have as you go through the process. Blossom: Hi Martin, I have some of your books, awesome! I want to use the net but am afraid my employer will see my resume out there. Should I worry? Terra Dourlain: Go get her Martin! Martin Yate: Hi Blossom, dearie! You DO know you are named after a very famous American jazz singer? Gee, you think your boss might be concerned that you are using his or her email and time to do a job hunt? Darned right! Yes, you do have to be concerned about confidentiality. And I'm going to turn you over to Terra Dourlain, to give you some tips about this, she is one of the most knowledgeable people in the field. Terra Dourlain: Blossom, there are many techniques to protect your identity online. First of all, set up a secondary email account, such as Hotmail or Yahoo!; there are many out there. They will allow you to have more than one name, or no name at all when you complete your user identity. Martin Yate: I'm jumping in; one thing to be aware of -- some of us have funny email names, like yours truly, has something called McCoy007, which we all think is funny, but it sucks for a job hunt. When you are job hunting, that email address needs to be professional in nature. Maybe just your initials will do. OK, turning you back to Terra. Terra Dourlain: Blossom, and everyone -- almost every major job board, and job distribution tool, for example, www.resumexpress.com/careerbrain or www.yourmissinglink.com/cgi-bin/associate.cgi?a=CareerBrain2 -- these will allow you to create an online confidential identity. Use it. Keep it professional, and manage your career confidentially. Martin Yate: One last comment here, folks. We will be mentioning during the course of the show a number of different sites and links. If you miss anything, just email me at martinyate@careerbrain.com and we will email you all the links we have mentioned on the show, and more! In other words, the ones we have forgotten in the heat of the moment, in the heat of passion!
