Kujira: Belgium - both French and Flemish (the 'dark side') if I go more than 3 generations back. Yeah - spelling is always a challenge.

CCCorinth: Trixie- if you have some material that the original immigrants brought with them in the way of papers, it can help locate where your ancestors came from. Do you have any material like that? Kujira- have you tried looking for material on the net?

Trixie Bab: I have some info from an uncle that my surname originated from England.

Kujira: No - I haven't CCCorinth - any suggestions for places to start?

CCCorinth: Kujira- there are a lot of great sources on the net- the best I have found to date is www-personal.umich.edu/cgaunt/gen int1.html. Make a note of that- it is a huge site, with a lot of material you will probably find relevant. Trixie- ok- that’s a starting point. What sort of info is it?

Kujira: Kewl - thanx - I will check that out later.

CCCorinth: Kujira- Do you speak any of the languages of your ancestors?

Trixie Bab: Just that 2 men with my surname came to the states from England, one stayed in the New England area and the other moved to the central north.

CCCorinth: Trixie- is the name an uncommon name?

Trixie Bab: Yes, well, at least I thought so until I started researching it.

CCCorinth: Trixie- that is great! An uncommon name makes it a lot easier to find material. Ahh- you found that it wasn’t so uncommon?

Trixie Bab: Well, its not nearly as common as say Smith or Jones.

Kujira: I speak enuff French to navigate around - in French - but the Flemish is beyond me.

CCCorinth: I hate trying to research Smith or Jones ancestors.

Trixie Bab: CCC, I bet.

CCCorinth: Kujira- nonetheless, you do have a little understanding of the language. Actually, the best place to start is with parents and relatives.

Trixie Bab: That’s where I started.

CCCorinth: They are mines of information- and the older they are the more likely you are to find some very good information. Trixie- with your parents?

Trixie Bab: I didn't realize I had so many relatives! Yes and my uncle.

CCCorinth: Trixie-and once you start researching families in the 19th centuries and before, you realize that the families were huge, with LOTS of children.

Trixie Bab: I didn't know that my grandmother kept records of the family, but now she's not able to remember much so he has all the records.

CCCorinth: It is not uncommon to find families with 12 or more children in them. Not that all of them survived.
