Borders.com presents Kathleen DesMaisons March 19, 1999 Borders.com presents NetCafeLive with Kathleen DesMaisons, author of the book, "Potatoes Not Prozac" discusses health issues involving sugar-sensitivity, diet, depression, and sugar. LilyCCC: Welcome to NetCafeLive Where we host authors and celebrities throughout the month. Thanks for joining us! Borders NetCafeLive is a joint production of Borders.com(tm) & Talk City(tm), a Talk City, Inc. Production. Tonight's guest is Kathleen DesMaisons, Ph.D. She is here to talk about " Potatoes Not Prozac". Addressing the millions of Americans who suffer from genetic sugar-sensitivity, this book presents a practical and workable eating program that uses everyday foods--with an emphasis on complex carbohydrates and vegetables--to balance sugar levels in the body. Welcome to Talk City Kathleen! KathleenDesMaisons: Thank you, I'm delighted to be here! LilyCCC: Kathleen, it’s great to have here. Can you start off by telling us about your background and what inspired you to write Potatoes Not Prozac. KathleenDesMaisons: I have a long history working in alcohol and drug addiction, and was looking for better solutions for my clients. I also have the SAME problems that you all have and was looking for a solution for myself as well. So the book tells the story of that solution. LilyCCC: Kathleen your book speaks of genetic sugar sensitivity. Can you tell us exactly what that means and how it causes the body to react? KathleenDesMaisons: Some people are born with a body that has a volatile Blood Sugar Response: low serotonin and low beta-endorphins, and this combination makes us have an intense reaction to the drug effects of sugars. The way we tell whether we are sugar sensitive is how much we LOVE warm chocolate chip cookies! Aethus: what does Prozac actually do to our brain? KathleenDesMaisons: Prozac increases the level of serotonin, and makes us less depressed and less impulsive. It also has HUGE side effects, and may stop working after a few months. MEPsname: Hello Kathleen! I've been successful at knocking some sugars out of my life. Will I kill myself to drink one 8 ounce glass of milk daily? KathleenDesMaisons: Hardly, MEPsname And congratulations! MysticWarrior-: Why does Prozac make you go in a daze sometimes? KathleenDesMaisons: Are you eating breakfast? MysticWarrior-: no
