IRS presents IRS e-file experts April 03, 2001
IRS: Want to e-file your own tax return? For the next hour, ask the IRS experts how e-file your return using your PC. It's the easy, accurate and secure way to file. Welcome to the chat! Kathleen, Mary and Maxanne are our IRS e-file experts today, ready to answer your questions. Maxanne-IRS: Hi. I'm from the IRS. We look forward to answering the questions you have about filing your returns using your personal computer. Kathleen-IRS: I'm also from the IRS, and I'm glad to be here tonight to chat with you about PC filing, and we're just glad to be able to help you out by answering your questions. Mandyble: Is IRS e-file completely paperless? Kathleen-IRS: Yes. This year you can choose the new Self-Select PIN as your signature. XandraII: How will I know if the IRS has received my return? Maxanne-IRS: After the return is transmitted, the electronic return transmitter informs you whether the return has been accepted or rejected by the IRS. This electronic return verification is a unique benefit of IRS e-file. If the return was not accepted, the electronic return transmitter, as part of their customer service, will assist you in the correction process. Paul P: Do I need to submit Forms W-2, W-2G and Form 1099-R to the IRS? Maxanne-IRS: No, the requirement to attach Forms W-2, Wage and Tax Statement, Form W-2G, Certain Gambling Winnings, and form 1099-R, Distribution From pensions, Annuities, Retirement or Profit-Sharing Plans, IRAs, Insurance Contracts, etc., with the form 8453-OL, U.S. Individual Income Tax Declaration for an IRS file On-Line Return, has been eliminated. However, we advise you to continue to maintain copies of these attachments for your records. if you do not use a Self-Select PIN to sign your tax return, a completed form 8453-OL should be mailed to the IRS service center where their electronic return was accepted. Littlebucks: Is there a fee for this filing option? Kathleen-IRS: The IRS does not charge a fee for e-file. However an electronic return transmitter offering this service to taxpayers may charge a fee for transmission. Check out the IRS e-file Partners or On-Line Filing software companies’ pages to learn about free and low cost e-file opportunities. WaitingForTheMail: When will I get my refund? Maxanne-IRS: Refunds should be in your savings or checking account within 2 weeks if you chose direect deposit, in about 3 weeks if you chose a paper check. TX-Dierdre: What if I owe money? How do I pay? Kathleen-IRS: If you owe money, you can make payment in one of three convenient ways: 1. By authorizing a direct debit (automatic withdrawal) from a checking or savings account. 2. By credit card (Discover Card, American Express Card, or MasterCard), or 3. By mailing a check or money order (made out to the United States Treasury) using Form 1040-V, Payment Voucher. One of the advantages of Options 1 and 2 is that you receive an immediate acknowledgement when your payment is accepted by IRS. Pheobe: Where can I find out how to file using my computer?
