IRS presents IRS e-file experts April 05, 2001
IRS: Want to e-file your own tax return? For the next hour, ask the IRS experts how to use TeleFile. It's the easy, accurate, and secure way to file, or to request an extension. Welcome to the chat! Pam, Nancy, and Kathleen are our IRS e-file experts today, ready to answer your questions. Nancy-IRS: We are looking forward to discussing 4868 TeleFile, because it is such a simple way to file an extension. Pam-IRS: I just want to encourage everyone that is eligible to TeleFile, because it offers the benefits of electronic filing, without the need of a computer. Kathleen-IRS: I'm glad the folks have joined on with us tonight to get their questions answered about electronic filing, and TeleFile especially, because the time is winding up. Double Double: What is 4868 TeleFile? All: It is an automated interactive voice response system that allows you to file a Form 4868 "Application for Automatic Extension of Time to File US Individual Income Tax Return" by phone. Casualty: How does 4868 TeleFile work? Nancy-IRS: You need to obtain a Form 4868 and fill in lines 2, 3, for spouse, 4 and 5. You can download a Form by clicking on ftp.fedworld.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f4868.pdf. You will be asked for your Social Security Number and Date of Birth. If you are filing a joint extension, you will also need to provide your spouse's Social Security Number and Date of Birth. Once you have been verified, you will be asked to provide the information from Form 4868. If you choose to make a payment, it can be authorized during the call. MoJa: What if I didn't file a tax return for 1999? Pam-IRS: You would not be able to use TeleFile or 4868. You could try the other methods of electronic filing, being online or through a preparer. Chrysanthemum: What if I can't find my 1999 tax return? Pam-IRS: If you're asking if you can use TeleFile, you don't necessarily need a copy of your 1999 tax return. If you are going to do 4868, you need your Adjusted Gross Income. You can call 1-800-829-1040 for the Customer Service Representative, and you can receive the Adjusted Gross Income and Total Tax over the phone. Rambunctious: What is TeleFile? Pam-IRS: TeleFile is an interactive computer program that allows qualified taxpayers to file a simple Federal tax return (Form 1040EZ) electronically with IRS, using the TeleFile toll-free number and a touch-tone telephone. A personal computer is not necessary. The program will compute the earned income tax credit if you are eligible. It also automatically figures the amount of your refund or balance due. Reg Ind: With TeleFile, do I have to make a payment? Pam-IRS: With the Form 4868, you are not required to make a payment with the form, but a payment can be made by using Direct Debit, or you can mail a check in. Zippy: What if I want to pay by check? Can I still call in my extension? Pam-IRS: Yes. You will need to make your check or money order payable to the United States Treasury. Please write your Social Security Number, daytime phone number, Tax Year 2000, and TeleFile Form 4868 on the check. Do not mail in your Form. See your form for the mailing address.
