Nancy-IRS: If you have Direct Deposit, you can get it in as little as 10 days. If it's a paper check, it is going to take about 3 weeks.

Striped Tie: Why use TeleFile when the form is easy enough?

Pam-IRS: Using TeleFile allows you to file your taxes using a touch-tone telephone in two very easy steps. Fill out the TeleFile Tax Record, completing lines A-H, and answer the questions on the Earned Income Credit (EIC) TeleFile Checklist before calling. Call the toll-free TeleFile number located in the TeleFile tax package. Enter the information from the TeleFile Tax Record. TeleFile does the math for you and tells you the amount of your refund or how much you owe. The TeleFile system gives you immediate proof that the IRS has received your return information right on the phone, and there is nothing to mail. There are no stamps, envelopes, or trips to the post office needed. The phone call typically takes about 10 minutes. Note - A confirmation number is provided at the end of the call to indicate proof TeleFile accepted the tax return. You must stay on the line to record this number. The return is not considered complete until the confirmation number has been provided.

Pockets: What if I owe money? How do I send it to the IRS?

Pam-IRS: Three payment options are available. Credit Card. To pay by credit card (NOVUS/Discover Card, American Express Card, or Master Card) by telephone or over the Internet, the company that processes the credit card payment will charge a convenience fee for this service. Direct Debit. To pay the amount you owe using direct debit (automatic withdrawal) from a checking or savings account, (type of account, etc.), of the TeleFile Tax Record. This information will be entered into the TeleFile system when you make the call to file your tax return. Your account will not be debited until the payment date that you indicate (designation cannot be later than the original due date of the return). Check or Money Order. You may continue to pay your balance due by check or money order made payable to the United States Treasury (not the Internal Revenue Service). Mail the payment to Internal Revenue Service; P. O. Box 6826; Chicago, Illinois 60680-6826. Include the Form 8855-V payment voucher from your TeleFile package with your payment.

Tax Free: I don't owe taxes. Can I file using TeleFile after April 15th?

Pam-IRS: Yes. You can TeleFile until August 15th. If August 15th falls on a weekend or federal holiday, you have until midnight of the following business day to submit your return.

Suited: How does Direct Debit work?

Nancy-IRS: You authorize the withdrawal to be taken from your checking or savings account. To use this feature, you will need to have your 1999 tax return with you during the call. You will be asked to provide the Adjusted Gross Income and Total Tax. This is an enhanced security feature. Once you have been authenticated, you will be asked for your banking institution's Routing Number and account number, and if you prefer to have it withdrawn from your savings or checking account. Your withdrawal will be done on April 15th. You sign this authorization by using the new electronic "Self-Select PIN" that is being offered this filing season. To do this, you choose any five numbers, except all zeroes, as your signature. You enter these numbers over the phone, and you will receive a confirmation number at the end of the call.
